Which version of jqGrid ? you should use the same version of CSS file together with jqGrid.js
Grid 3.8.1 / UI CSS 1.8.6 (sunny)
in IE7 a group row become wider when colModel has more columns with 'hidden: true' property
any hidden column adds some pixels to group row
Probably the bug and another more heavy bug described in the post
