Is it considered normal behavior for the currently selected row to be deselected after submitting a form edit? If so, is there a way to prevent the row from being deselected?

I should add, this grid is sourced via json with loadonce = true, so the update is on local data.

Hello,

Yes there is such way (actually there is documentation), check for reloadAfterSubmit option.
