I would like the grid get initialized but do not load the data (json) first.
Then when the user input click 'search' button else where outside the grid, the grid will load the data.
Is it possible?

try this
$(”#mygrid”).jqGrid({
…
datatype : 'local'
});
$(”#mygrid”).jqGrid('setGridParam',{datatype:'json'});
The grid initiallly will load with no data and after that can accept any request.
