Be a sure that the jqModal.css is loaded.

In FF it's all right. Only with IE (6 & 7) has problem (no javascript error is show). To certify that Modal and css are loading i try change background-colors, and… change.
1. I'm not 100% sure, but the default mode of IE is quirks mode. Set it to any other diffrent from this.
2. A good is to do so in your head section.

We were getting the same problems as in the screenshot posted by CHVCS above. ie – grey overlay above grid.
We have resolved it now by changing jqModal.js.
