I seem to be triggering a subtle bug in my web application in IE 8 when using the grouping feature of jqGrid 3.8.1 (it works very well in Firefox 3.6.11): triggering the reloadGrid event handler on several of my tables throws an exception.

After tracking it down for a while, I have determined the source of the error, but not the cause.
