Under 4.4.4, when I update a footer row with $(element).footerData('set', object) a second time (and all subsequent times), the footer row “flashes” the original

Ah ha! The solution was to set reloadAfterSubmit: false,

Seems like that should the default when data is set to local, either directly or through loadonce: true;
