OK, thanks for the pointers.
I think my basic problem was a misunderstanding of how jqGrid works.
It's OK, I found the error, I had “sortorder: date” in the options so that, on the first call, the SQL returned no data – but when I clicked on one of the columns the sortoder became “asc” and all was well.
