Just paly with this problem a lot of time. My opinion is that that this a bug in sortable widtet in Chrome. The items loses its width after drop. I will futher investigate this.

How do you set the rownumber to be resizable? By default this column is not able to be resized.

Yes this is true. The name from colModel is the name in form.
For the allowed characters for the name attribute you can look here:

Yes this is possible,using the title property in colModel set to false and use custom formater to do this.
There are a lot of exmples here in this forum.
You will neeed to use beforeShowForm form event for this purpose.
Look at demos, there is a such example. Also there are a lot of othre post regarding this.
In general you will need to use afterInsertRow event with disabled gridview mode.
