I was wondering if there might be a known cause for this.

I have jqGrid running fine in FF 3.5 and Chrome, but in IE8 and Safari it is completely blank with no error or anything appearing.

I have pretty much figured this out.

Two errors have been there causing the problem. First there was an extra ',' (comma) at the end of the jqGrid settings.
