I have pretty much figured this out.
Two errors have been there causing the problem. First there was an extra ',' (comma) at the end of the jqGrid settings.

The XML String is working fine, but not when using an external xml file which I've outline above.

I did try the backslash in th xml file but no luck. Not sure if it's to do with the page, total and record, or that it is mixxing the or a similar item but will test it a bit more.

That xml string is working now – great.
Ok, I've had no success with the above and still don't know why it works but I do have the My First Grid running though not 100%.
The jqGrid appears but none of the data.
