I have found a work around:

if I use column chooser to first remove a column then click ok. the column is removed and then I can use the chooser again to add the column I just removed plus another column.

the issue only occurs after a grid import and then using column chooser to add a column.

I was able to resolve the issue see pull request #598 on github for the code changes to the jq grid source located in the xml2json function.

the main issue is that the function and boolean values where never parsed back into there javascript equivalent. they remained as strings. resolving that parsing issue resolved the import issue.
