I found that you used not the last version of setGroupHeaders. In the last version used in the demo I used some changes. So one should at least change the line 694 of grid.custom.js to

if ($parent.is(":visible") && $parent.is(":has(span.ui-jqgrid-resize)")) {

The current version of setGroupHeaders produce the results (the “Date” column header)
