If you want to use jqGrid 4.0 on xhtml-page, you must make valid code. Replace:
1. if(this.tagName!=”TABLE”)
  ->
  if(this.tagName.toLowerCase()!='table')
2. ->
3. ->
4. ” selected=selected”
  ->
  ” selected='selected'”

it would be much better if you will post the information based on uncompressed code of jqGrid, for example, from the jquery.jqGrid.src.js

I'm using HTML5 page.

tagName in all web browsers are in capital characters with content_type = 'text/html'. But tagName in all web browsers are in lower case with content_type = 'application/xhtml+xml'. Better to make code independed of content_type.

Also you can make

if(this.tagName.toUpperCase()!='TABLE')
