I initially thought that the navbar wasn't showing correctly due to my grid being very narrow. but after fiddling with turning off the pager and other buttons, and adding my own buttons, i've found that the overflow param on '.ui-jqgrid .ui-pg-table td' is forcing everything to hide. The left seems to be sized as 2px, why? and thus not showing at all. the centre is sized 0px and everything else is then taken up by the right which has no size…
