I tried playing around with css and “vertical-align: top” but it just wouldn't work.

Define after loading the css

.ui-jqgrid tr.jqgrow td {vertical-align:top}

For me this work

I'm pretty sure I had tried this earlier and it didn't work. But using your exact line, it did work.
