I'm having a similar issue.
I found the problem.
the cause seems to be with the url of the main grid.
With a lot of help from Nathan, I got it working.
I couldn't find an exact example of this, but I should be able to go off of the demonstration called “Search Big Sets.”

I'm thinking that the problem might be in what external scripts I'm linking to.
So, you're saying that the returned JSON string for the grid as a subgrid needs to include rows, page, total, records, etc.?
