Thanks for this. I see the problem. I think that groupCollapse should array which should correspond of the grouping levels.
Will hee how to fix this.

I have done it llike this:
p = $.extend(true, $.jgrid.jqModal || {}, p)
You will need to set some options afrter table to grid – please look carfully into the examples
Our example page work fin with subgrids in IE9.
So little info is not enought to give you a help.

You will be a sure that both grids does not have equal ID's – that is if you have id=3 in grid, then in subgrid it should be not = 3- see how to avoid this using the idPrefix grid optin.
Everthing will be OK if you change to jquery 1.7.2 and to the latest jQueryUI 1.8.21
Which example do you exactley mean? Please explain! There are a lot of edit examples into the demo.
