Thanks for this. It is really a bug and happen only when jqModal is not present.
Just now I have fixed this in GitHub. Could you please try with this fix and let me known if all is Ok.

Yes the current documentation does not cover 100% of the 3.5 release.
Since jqGrid representation completley depend on UI Theming you should set the name of the icon from UI Theme.
By Example:
$(“#gridid”).navButtonAdd ('#pager', buttonicon: 'ui-icon-cancel');
where
ui-icon-cancel is a name from theme roller
