I think you ask for the alternate rows in grid.
This is true, but it is not connected with jqGrid, but with jQuery Theme roller.
In some themes the alt rows can not be seen due to the fact that in the themeroller there is no class for alternate row and we use another.
In order to see it , please use another theme or create your own alternate row collor.
There is a option for this purpose.
