There was a “typo” in the DOCTYPE (I missed a double-quote) so I imagine that it was ignored and the browser got confused about which version of HTML I am using.

I get the following error message from IE8:

ugh. I use mac and only venture to IE if I have to.
I find many IE issues become resolved using the proper doc string. Might be worth checking out, but truthfully I have no real good advice for you with IE

it works fine with FF 3.0.14, but FF 3.5.3
So it's browser dependent.
Someone could suggest a workaround? (and no, replacing the browser with an older one is not a viable option…
)
Oops.. it should be: I'm using jqGrid 3.5.3 with FF 3.5
